    2007-9-20

    I'm very happy today because my parents will come to see me this afternoon. I haven't seen them for almost half a year. As we take a shift work, I'm afraid I can seldom go back home to visit them. My mother will accompany me for some days. I will enjoy my life in the following days. I feel great pleasure now.

    1.遇到乞讨者：遇到要钱的就给他（她）点饭，遇到要饭的就给他（她）点钱。

    2.上车遇到老弱病残、孕妇：让座的时候别动声色，也别大张旗鼓。站起来用身体挡住其他人留出空位子给需要的人，然后装作下车走远点。人太多实在走不远，人家向你表示谢意的时候微笑一下。

    3.雨雪的时候、天冷的傍晚或者是雪天的傍晚，遇到卖菜的、卖水果的、卖报纸的剩的不多了又不能回家，能全买就全买，不能全买就买一份，反正吃什么也是吃，看什么也是看，买下来让人早点回家。

    4.遇到迷路的小孩和老头老太太，能送回家送回家，不能送回家的送上车、送到派出所也行，如果有电话的替老人或小孩打个电话就走，反正你也不缺那两个电话费。

    5.遇到迷路的人打听某个地址，碰巧你又知道，就主动告诉一声。别不好意思，没有人笑话你。

    6.捡到钱包就找找失主，如果你实在缺钱就把现金留下。打电话告诉失主就说你在厕所里捡到的。把信用卡、身份证、驾驶执照还给人家，一般人家也不会在乎钱了。把人家的地址记在你的笔记本上，以后发达了去找人家道个谦，把钱还给人家。

    7.遇到学生出来打工的、勤工俭学的，特别是中学生、小姑娘。她卖什么你就买点，如果她不是家庭困难，出来打工也需要勇气的，鼓励鼓励她吧。

    8.遇到夜里摆地摊的，能买就多买一些，别还价，东西都不贵。家境哪怕好一点，谁会大冷天夜里摆地摊。

    9.如果时间还宽裕，就请把这几句话多转几个地

  • 人的一生，到底在追求甚麼？

    有一個美國商人坐在墨西哥海邊一個小漁村的碼頭上，看著一個墨西哥漁夫划著一
    艘小船靠岸。小船上有好幾尾大黃鰭鮪魚，這個美國商人對墨西哥漁夫能抓這麼高
    檔的魚恭維了一番，還問要多少時間才能抓這麼多？

    墨西哥漁夫說，才一會兒功夫就抓到了。美國人再問，你為甚麼不待久一點，好多
    抓一些魚？

    墨西哥漁夫覺得不以為然: 這些魚已經足夠我一家人生活所需啦！

    美國人又問：那麼你一天剩下那麼多時間都在幹甚麼？

    墨西哥漁夫解釋：我呀？我每天睡到自然醒，出海抓幾條魚，回來後跟孩子們玩一
    玩，再跟老婆睡個午覺，黃昏時晃到村子裡喝點小酒，跟哥兒們玩玩吉他，我的日
    子可過得充滿又忙碌呢！

    美國人不以為然，幫他出主意，他說：我是美國哈佛大學企管碩士，我倒是可以幫
    你忙！你應該每天多花一些時間去抓魚，到時候你就有錢去買條大一點的船。自然
    你就可以抓更多魚，在買更多漁船。然後你就可以擁有一個漁船隊。到時候你就不
    必把魚賣給魚販子，而是直接賣給加工廠。然後你可以自己開一家罐頭工廠。如此
    你就可以控制整個生產、加工處理和行銷。然後你可以離開這個小漁村，搬到墨西
    哥城，再搬到洛杉磯，最後到紐約。在那裡經營你不斷擴充的企業。

    墨西哥漁夫問：這又花多少時間呢？

    美國人回答：十五到二十年。

    然後呢？

    美國人大笑著說：然後你就可以在家當皇帝啦！時機一到，你就可以宣佈股票上市
    ，把你的公司股份賣給投資大眾。到時候你就發啦！你可以幾億幾億地賺！

    然後呢？

  • I TRY TO REMEMBER…

    1. Everybody doesn’t have to love me．无须人人都爱我
          Not everyone has to love me or even like me．I don’t necessarily like everybody I know，so why should everybody else like me? I enjoy  being liked and being loved，but if somebody doesn’t like me，1 will still be okay and still feel like I am an okay person．I cannot make some-body like me anymore than someone can get me to like them．I don't need approval all the time．If someone does not approve of me．1 will still be okay．

    2.It is okay to make mistakes．犯错误没什么大不了的
          Making mistakes is something we all do，and I am still a fine and worthwhile person when I make them．There is no reason for me to get upset when I make a mistake．I am trying，and if I make a mistake，I am going to continue trying．I can handle making a mistake．it is okay for others to make a mistake．too．I will accept my mistakes and also the mistakes that others make.

    3.Other people are okay and I am okay．互相尊重
           People who do things that I don’t like are not necessarily bad people．They should not necessarily be punished just because I don’t like what they do or did．There is no reason why other people should be the way I want them to be，and there is no reason why I should be the way somebody else wants me to be．People will be whatever they want to be，and 1 will be whatever I want to be．I cannot control other people or change them．They are who they are; we all deserve basic respect．

    4.I don’t have to control things．我无须控制一切
           I will survive if things are different than what 1 want them to be．I can accept things the way they are，accept people the way they are，and accept myself the way I am．There is no reason to get upset if I can’t change things to fit my idea of how they ought to be．There is no reason why I should have to like everything．Even if I don’t like it，I can live with it．

    5.I am responsible for my day．我对自己的一生负责
          I am responsible for how I feel and what I do．Nobody can make me feel anything．If I have a rotten day. I am the one who allowed it to be that way．If I have a great day，l am the one who desexes credit for being positive．It is not the responsibility of other people to change so that I can feel better．I am the one who is in charge of my life．

    6.I can handle it when things go wrong．出问题时我能应付
         I don’t need to watch out for things to go wrong．They usually go just fine，and when they don’t．I can handle it．I don’t have to waste energy worrying．The sky won’t fall；things will be okay．

    7.It is important to try．试一试很重要
         I can．Even though I may be faced with  difficult tasks，it is better to try than to avoid  them．Avoiding a task does not give me any  opportunities for success or joy，but trying  does．Things worth having are worth the effort．I might not be able to do everything．But I can do something．

    8.I am capable．我能做到
           I don’t need someone else to take care of my problems．1 am capable．I can take care of myself．I can make decisions for myself．I can think for myself．I don’t have to depend on somebody else to take care of me．

    9.I can change.我可以改变
          I don’t have to be a certain way because of what has happened in the past．Every day is a new day．It' s silly to think I can’t help being the way I am．Of course I can．1 can change．

    10.I can be flexible．我能随机应变
           There is more than one way to do something．More than one person has had good ideas that will work．There is no one and only "best" way．Everybody has ideas that are worthwhile．Some may make more sense to me than others. but everyone’s ideas are worthwhile，and everyone has something worthwhile to contribute．

  • 学校里的常用语

    学校里有很多在这个环境里的常用语，比如“点名”啊，“师兄师姐”啊，“学什么专业”啊等等，今天我们就来看一些学校里的常用语。

    1. I wonder if the Prof took attendance already.
    有的学生总喜欢逃课，最怕的就是老师上课的时候点名、记考勤，这个“点名”就叫做“take attendance”。

    2. God, I only missed two classes and I’m already out of it.
    即使老师不记考勤，逃课的结果也不太好承受，因为老师上课的进度通常都比较快，逃多几节课就跟不上了。“Be out of it” 就是跟不上的意思，那要“赶上”就是“catch up with (them ASAP)”了。　

    3. Hey, I got the whole info from the upperclassman.
    要考试了，很多人都想去师兄师姐那里了解一下往年的情况吧？“Upperclassman”就是高年级的“师兄师姐”，有时候也用seniors或 older guys来表示。

    4. I struggle for words when asked a sudden question.
    上课溜号，被老师叫起来回来问题，不知所措，无言以对，怎么表示？就是“struggle for words 难以回答”了。

    5. Which department is she in?
    她是哪一个系的?

    我们都知道主修是用 major 这个词，简单地问法就是 "What's your major?" 但是你也可以用 which field 或是 which department 来代替。比如说有人来演讲，你想知道他是什么系的教授，你就可以问 "Which department is she in?" 或是 "Which field is she in?" 还有一种最口语问主修的问法，就是问人家 "What are you studying?" 就可以了。

    6. Is there any way we can move it?
    我们有没有办法改地方？


    Way 就是办法，你可以说 "Is there some other way...?" 就是“有没有其它的办法”。Move it 可以指很多事，如换教室，换地点，都可以用 move，不要再说 change place 了。有一次老师宣布在某间教室考试，可是因为那间教室平时就很吵，所以我的同学就举手说 "Is there any way we can move it?"

And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about." Do you agree or disagree with him? Write an essay of about 400 words entitled:

    Ambition

        Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer, once said, " We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide (so) that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how different the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about." He gives due weight to the role of ambition in our life, but he ignores the fact that ambition alone cannot form or change a person's destiny.(反驳对方观点前,先肯定其合理之处) To fulfill ambition and "make us significant", we also need to be hard-working, persistent, and courageour.

        First of all, if you have know clearly what you want your life to be, it is hard work that carries you there. Take myself for example. I was born and grew up in a mountain village where many parents were illiterate and few children could go to first-class high schools, let alone enter college. Dissatisfied with living a farmer' life, I always dreamed of going to university and seeing the outside world. During the 12 years of schooling before college, I spent most of my time learning and worked harder than any classmate. Now, when I enjoy the fruits of my labor, I believe more firmly that "hard work" makes perfect(改自Practice makes perfect熟能生巧).

        Besides hard work, it takes persistence to travel on the path to your dream place. Numerous stories of success tell us that there is no royal road to great accomplishment(改自there is no royal road to learning学无坦途). Thomas Edison experimented and failed hundreds of times before inventing the light bulb. Abraham Lincoln lost dozens of political elections before becoming president of the US. Whatever your ambition is, the way to achieve it is not always even. To get where you want, you sometimes have to be able to face setbacks, overcome obstacles, and above all never give up.

        In many other cases, it takes courage to do what you aspire to. Darwin would not have publicized his The Evolution of Species if he had been afraid to fight against his times. Amelia Earhart would not have become a pilot and realized her ambition to fly across the Atlantic Ocean if she had lacked the courage to defy social conventions. As these examples have illlustrated, if you have a strong faint in what you choose to do and in what you want to achieve, you must be strong enough to stick to it despite sneers, oppositions, and social pressure.

        I agree with Joseph Epstein that we can shape our own destiny, but as the above has shown, I am not convinced that ambition alone can make it happen. To turn our dreams into reality, we need to work hard, persevere and be brave.
